Various (El Kid / Filter Dread / Lily) – ‘From The Reels – A NoCorner Collection’ 3×12″ Boxset [NoCorner]

Well hyped to be getting this, having waited pretty damn eagerly ever since the photocopied ‘forthcoming’ announcement that arrived in record box many weeks back. Since it’s inception in 2012 the NoCorner label has become one of my favourite imprints. Cassette only, buy-on-site releases that we always try and pick-up through RewindForward (RwdFwd) upon release, dropped in limited quantities and occasionally bundled with exclusive bits just for the store.

The Bristol based crew behind NoCorner (No Corner?) have kept their philosophy simple, producing quality releases that are perfectly suited to the format. From the artwork to the sounds recorded on the tape, the releases are special, with the physicality and aesthetics of each one drenched in personality.

The label’s stayed closely associated with their base in the ever-good Bristol scene, including members of Young Echo with Jabu even offering the one non-cassette release to date, a 7″ featuring Kahn on remix that came out last year. It’s the seven deep tape catalogue however that’s really defined what NoCorner is about, sticking to the hand written mantra on their homepage.

Genuinely mean it when I say there’s not been a bad drop to date, though a few releases in particular have really stood out for us. Gorgon Grime, the golden-era grime mixtape from Kahn & Neek is as unique a release as you can get. Rough and ready, it copped a lot of unnecessary flack on the grime boards from the purists who wanted the freestyles and live recordings to themselves. Around this time last year came Filter Dread with Space Loops, taking out position in our ‘Best Of 2013‘, and which, along with Seekersinternational dropping the C40 Rootprinciple on the label was the tipping point for us to start pulling together the plans for a cassette mixer. That’s how good the tracks are, we just want to play them out.

Fortunately the good people in Bristol listened, and have decided to press up a selection of their releases to wax. They’ve remastered tracks from Lily (released on NC006), El Kid (NC003) and Filter Dread (NC005) for vinyl, and once again asked Studio Tape-Echo to step up for some stunning aesthetics on the 3×12″ boxset. You’ve got to give a special nod to the way the original tapes have been fitted in to the design of the individual record sleeves, showing the cornerstone or foundation that they’ve built upon.

As an added bonus, we’ve even got a nice yellow 7″ featuring Vessel and Killing Sound remixes of El Kid, and for those leaning towards the initial limited 100 run it includes the NoCorner zine, also designed by Studio Tape-Echo.

It’s available now exclusively through RwdFwd. get on it quick. The write-up they’ve given it along with the accompanying photos is much better than anything else we could offer, check it out below then head over here to check out clips and purchase: https://rwdfwd.com/products/from-the-reels-a-nocorner-collection/

After months of eager anticipation, it is with great pleasure that we can present to you this special collection of music from the NoCorner catalogue – remastered for vinyl and represented with great care, love and attention to detail.

Spanning across three heavyweight 12″s and one fluorescent yellow 7″, NoCorner unveil some of their most treasured cassette-output of recent years in this new shape and form, alongside a previously unreleased Killing Sound remix of El Kid’s ‘We Need Mirrors’.

This product equally prides itself in aesthetics as well as it’s sonics.

For the uncompromisingly original music that is featured on these grooves, with each of the three LP’s features the full-length experience, cut on a continuos groove across each side of the disc, equally suited for home-listening, still cut loud enough for DJ-use, the total run time of this collection comes to around 135mins.

From the captivating explorations of experimental minimal-techno, jungle & grime archaeology and cyber-punk electronics through to the submerged vessel and killing sound reinterpretations featured on the extra disc, this collection of music captures some truly timeless moments in recent underground music.

From El Kid’s ‘Labyrinths EP’ (NC003) to Filter Dreads’ ‘Space Loops’ (NC005), Lily’s ‘Modern Malaise’ (NC006) and the ‘We Need Mirrors’ Remix 7″ (NC003.1=7) – each of the discs stands out for it’s utterly unique musical attitude and delivery.

Truly accomplished pieces of underground music, the initial cassette-only editions of 100 units each sold out within days of release, it’s a great thing that these are now available to a wider audience…

This package has been in deliberation and fine-tuning for some time now, and looking at the outcome, it is clear that it’s a product that is far from generic… The four discs are overseen with a countless amount of stamps, hand-crafted and printed inserts, screenprints, re-packaging and dymo-labelling – enough to make it very clear that NoCorner are keen to maintain their D.I.Y. inclinations whilst offering something truly special and artisan.

A listen to the clips and a look at the pictures and stats will give you an idea, but the true appreciation will come when you hold the product in your hands and the music runs it’s course through the records grooves.

Includes DL code (except the 7″, which will remain vinyl-only).
