Tall Black Guy – Mixes #1 and #2

Out to Tall Black Guy, one of the cats keeping us interested in the art of chopping for beats and 16-pad sampler mastery. We first spotted Tall Black Guy (TBG) aka Terrel Wallace as a Detroit based contributor on Spencer Graham’s ‘One Hour Piece’ installation, having been lucky to hook one of the three cassettes created for it. Digging a bit deeper past that project and it was his golden-era funk and soul edits that really became the point where we sat up and paid attention. Helen Smith, Darondo and James Brown were the early stand-outs, and soon the likes of Olivier Daysoul, Phonte (Little Brother) and Hieroglyphics started appearing as guests and remixed features in his Soundcloud page that showed he could work the originals as well as inject super fresh bits back in to the boom-bap underground.

The thing about TBG is that he sounds like he’s having fun. He’s not reinventing the wheel but he knows how to flip a beat without making it all about him, letting the best parts of the originals doing the legwork. This doesn’t come across as lazy at all, just a guy with a good ear for soulful beats. With producers trying to out weird each other in a race to quick hype, it’s good to have some pure head-nodding vibes to kick back to.

On that note, get some good speakers dug out and enjoy this wicked introduction to his music. DJ Raphael out of London seem to agree with us that Tall Black Guy’s productions make up the soundtrack of a good session, and dedicated two half-hour mixes to his workings.

Check them both out below, along with his original posted blurbs and track lists, then head over to TBG’s bandcamp to check out some originals: http://tallblackguy.bandcamp.com/

From humble origins in Detroit, raised on a healthy diet of Motown, Jazz, and Early Hip‐Hop — Terrel Wallace (aka Tall Black Guy) has been consistently building a massive online following through a steady stream of productions filled with incredibly clever sample flips and deft production chops ‐ being championed by the likes of Gilles Peterson (who included him on one of the latest Brownswood Bubblers albums), Lefto, Anthony Valadez, and countless others ‐ as well as recently being named the winner of the Robert Glasper Remix competition. With the tangible beginnings of worldwide recognition, Tall Black Guy has established himself to be one of the most influential producers from Chicago.

Here’s another special mix edition in acknowledgement and recognition of such a brilliant artist in the hip-hop scene, who’s music features regularly in my mixes. I first got introduced and then hooked on TBG’s sounds two years ago and it has paved the way for my love of instrumental, jazzy and soulful hip-hop. He has has a sound like no other, his sampling and chopping is outstanding. Please enjoy this TallBlackGuy mix.
