Secret Circuit – ‘Tropical Psychedelics’ LP [Emotional Response]

Picked this up a while ago off the back of his release on Tim Sweeney’s Beats In Space Records plate – which we rinsed out on radio, club and personal tips – but only just rediscovered it and finally given it a proper listen. Secret Circuit has absolutely smashed it with this LP, twelve cuts of scattered complex house with a cruise-line calypso basing and an experimental tip to ride. A combination pretty close to perfection.

Secret Ciruit is the alias of LA based Eddie Ruscha Jr., multi-instrumentalist and producer generally associated with the catalogue of shoegaze heroes Medicine (the band in The Crow), but more often embracing his hometown’s ethic of working with everyone and everything on a variety of projects. For the most part, Secret Circuit offerings have been limited to self released files and some stunning leftfield-rhythm cassette released mixes. Limited quantities of these tapes get made and sell quite quickly, but are available digitally from his bandcamp, and you can check out a personal favourite, Cosmic Papers, below. In a time where modern disco can rely on the same generic funk sounds in waves, Secret Circuit’s been exploring the psychic elements of beats with danceability better than anyone else we know, getting new sounds out of classic analogue equipment.
