It’s been a while since we stood in proper musique concrète territory but Transparencies 3″ CD from Ordeograph (one Andy Myers) has given us cause to unplug from the real world for a few hours and get lost in something left of the norm. Two and half hours of soundscapes converted from London field recordings presented in a cool package of artwork designed by art director David Coyle.
Recorded on basic equipment with minimal tools for filtering Transparencies was born from period of breakdown and recovery triggered by creative block. With only a limited release in 2006 the project has expanded to include five additional tracks from the original session material as well as a twenty minute continuous mix from TVO.
Broken20 does a standout job in all aspects of delivering this to us, and Myers has done equally well in achieving his desire to “explore texture and space…revealing the ambience of each place”. Somewhat dark and paranoid as much as comforting it achieves the level of escapism and audio storytelling that the genre thrives best in. Kindly, the tracks lend themselves to be taken as individual ten or fifteen minutes hits, best enjoyed with lack of distraction.
