Nenado – ‘Your Sketch’ Cassette [Astro:Dynamics]

Going to make this a quick post, unexpected travels and events seem to be taking up a surprising amount of time, hence the length between words lately. Had to give this a quick shout however; a stunning tape release from Nenado via the Astro:Dynamics label, a full-length, seven-track C30 or download that you need to check out.

Music doesn’t come much moodier, or built for a London winter for that matter. Minimal keys and drum loops, for the most part organic sounding, play alongside each other at chilled walking pace tempo. That conclusion is drawn from the fact that the music reminds me of a handful of early mornings walking around Soho, watching the shops open up during those rare, slightly damp moments when you could have the street to yourself with no cars or pedestrians in sight.

Sitting somewhere between Actress’ downtempo repetitive pieces and the sparser field recordings of Demdike Stare, it’s a really nice listen start to finish. Nenado has crafted his sounds carefully and then given them the room to stand-out on their own, supported only by others of similar qualities, never overcrowding or morphed in to something uncomfortably new. For those who lock in waiting for things to take off, it doesn’t happen, but instead reaches a nice meditative state, a separate world to get lost in that’s accurately run by rhythms.

We continue our run of form in 2014 by following releases from Alis and Vaghe Stelle with the debut release from the ever elusive Rasul Gafarov’s Nenado moniker.

Based in central Russia, Rasul has previously appeared on an erratic flow of 12″s under the name Lenta – including split 12″s with Software’s Huerco S on the Other Heights label, and Ahu (the house/techno side project of Touch’s Sohrab) on Iran’s Shahr Farang label, and has performed rare shows at the likes of acclaimed Moscow club ARMA17. Whilst his work as Lenta is undoubtedly skewed towards a stripped-back dancefloor aesthetic, his penchant for collisions of ambient experimentation and wayward rhythms is something that translates nicely into his creations as Nenado on this 7 track suite. ‘Your Sketch’ was written over 3 years, and incorpartes Rasul’s expansive archive of field recordings within these understated and fragile loop-centric meditations – from the Shackleton-esque ‘Hari Hari’, to the vocal grunts and cracks/pops of ‘Internal Dialogue’.
