Jimmy Monsta Funk and Kamikaze aka Paul Ackroyd got together a few weekends ago for what turned out to be four hours worth of killer tune selection. It’s been over two years since these guys got together to play records, stoked to present JMF vs KK for 2019, split across two parts.
I stand by my comments that Paul and JMF are my two favourite record collectors, knowledge bases and selectors.
There’s no other collections out there that I forever enjoyed going through as much as theirs. This has continually been driven home as I go through All My Records, rediscovering just how much influence they’ve had on my own stacks of wax.
Cards on the table this is the reconstructed version of their session. There’s a somewhat tragic story that accompanies the recordings. When going live Paul accidentally left the mic on the entire time, meaning somewhere there exists an alternate version: a version where Kamikaze and JMF are talking records for hours on end at Kamikaze Towers.
Man I miss those sessions. As much as I’d personally indulge listening to them chat over tracks Monstafunk and Kamikaze are forever respectful of the music they play, and as such the desire to leave the records at the forefront caused the original recording to be binned and the recreation to be the one we’re putting out there.
Part 1 is heavily tipped on the spiritual jazz side with Part 2 piecing together the likes of Urban Tribe, DJ Rashad, Mos Def and Yellow Magic Orchestra.
