In Conversation With Throwing Snow

If you’ve got an ear on the electronic music scene no doubt you’re getting more and more familiar with Throwing Snow aka Ross Tones, the first signing to Alex Nut‘s imprint, Hotep. Since that wax debut, his remixes for Gold Panda and Cloud have cemented him as an in demand composer and one of the most interesting producers on the scene.

The truth is, Ross’ work as Throwing Snow is merely the tip of the iceberg. As well as his involvement with Augustus Ghost, among others that he records and engineers for, his day job at Hear No Evil sees him pushing new labels and artists for synch – discovering these talents and helping artists get paid to support their work.

Moreso than anything else it’s the unbridled enthusiasm about music, displayed in an eagerness to record and remix any sound, that is infectious. Despite working on tracks all through the night and being surrounded by music all day everyday, you’ll still find him in and out of the Soho record stores each lunchtime. His record label, A Future Without, is something set up purely to push new artists they believe in, in an attempt to get them signed to larger labels. As below.

Forward looking and progressive, we put our artists first as nothing matters but the music. It’s a constantly evolving beast based upon the belief that a collective mentality can bring mutual benefit to all involved. Casting aside those major label “exclusive deal” clichés that even the most ethical indie labels seem to fall into eventually, A Future Without… brings artists opportunities without compromising their integrity or freedom to express.

Check out the interview below, done on the front couches of Phonica Records one morning, as he talks about the creative process, the art of synch composition, forthcoming material and his unique business model for A Future Without, all to a backing track of his vinyl released originals and remixes.
