Hugo Bighuggs

Isn’t the internet great? It lets me keep track of guys I grew up with doing insanely cooler stuff than I am.

Hugo Bighuggs was a mate of mine back in the day who I hadn’t heard from in over a decade until he randomly dropped in to one of my social media feeds a couple of weeks back. Known by a different surname back then he was always a blast to hang out with, up for anything and an overall top bloke.

I’ve just found out that he left Australia in 2014 and hasn’t returned since.

Now Hugo travels the world spending as little possible. Hitching through Europe, across borders, crashing in communes or new friend’s couches for a night or two, or pitching a tent should that fail. He records  his adventures and the people he meets and mixes it in with travelling tips and philosophy.

And if you’re thinking that the world doesn’t need another travel vlogger I’d urge you to check out an episode or two before passing judgement. This isn’t another Instagram feed designed for sponsorship – this is an unpretentious journey by a man curious about the world.

Hugo lives up to the promise to show you a different side to the countries he visits, which, for his latest series of hitchiking from France to Sweden stopping off everywhere in between. Someone needs to get this guy on Viceland.

Hi my name is Hugo. Friends and family also call me Huggs, Huggsy, Hugglington, BigHuges, Huggy Bear and Huggleberry Finn.

I’m a hitch hiker of the galaxy. A full time traveller. A dream seeker achiever. I left Australia in November 2014 and haven’t returned.

I travel via hitch hiking, walking, bus, trains, boats, pedal bikes, and anything which guarantees to give me the greatest adventure, the most human interaction, is most physically demanding (but enjoyable) and/or most economical (not necessarily achieved all at the same time).

I travel for knowledge – to learn what I DON’T know. I travel for new experiences and adventures – to stimulate all 21 senses (yes – 21, according to researchers). I travel to break down the mental walls of separatism (culture, class, nation, religion, gender etc) that are bashed into us by the media and our own countries and social circles – these propagate fear and distrust. I travel to open my heart – for higher thinking. I travel to learn more sustainable and less consumeristic ways of living – to step lightly and respectfully on Mother Earth. I travel to see how other cultures “Do It”. I travel to connect. I travel to remove ignorance. OF COURSE, I ALSO TRAVEL BECAUSE IT IS FUN!!

Big ups Hugo, long may you travel.
