Since we first chatted in Melbourne in 2006, I’ve been following Oddisee with a constant look of awe. Or at least trying to follow him. The underground producer / artist / label runner and hip-hop historian remains an important link to the worldwide scene for anyone in to beats, rhymes or digging. If you’re not on his mailing list, drop him a line here and get on it, as it’s one of the news updates I always make time to read. Instead of just saying it like so many others right now, Oddisee actually lives the “each one teach one” philosophy.

When it comes to digging for samples I must admit, I’m not the best at. When you have friends like mine you don’t have to be. I’d like to introduce you all to Maverick, a producer from Washington, DC by way of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Maverick & I have been friends for some time now, His knowledge on Hip Hop & records never ceases to amaze me.
The last time we hooked up, he played me some new beats he was working on. He’s a busy guy who has his hands in tons of things. The one thing he has yet to dabble in was a release. I convinced him to let me share his beats with you all. Consider these tracks “The First Step” in my homie making a name for himself.
I may be a bit late on this next joint, but a friend linked me on to French beatboxer Eklips, and his recent hype video where he busts through The History Of Hip-Hop in just over four minutes. After watching this twice and trainspotting what I could, I realised some fans of the clip had posted a rough tracklist, which I’ve copied in (unformatted) under the video.

Since the advent of YouTube we have seen a lot of beatboxers hawk their wares on the video channel. But I have never seen a beatboxer as adept as this one. He goes by the name EKLIP, and he’s from France. Don’t hold that against him. In a little over four minutes, on behalf of Trace Urban, he beatboxes his way through the varied history of hip-hop, even at one point rolling out the auto-tune. Now this is hip-hop. Freaking awesome.

Former DMC ranked cat in Oz, back when he first got to the UK the Diz strolled in to Wyld Pytch with his beat machine just to share some heat, and ended up with a job at London’s finest hip-hop purveyor.
