F**king hell this is heavy. As the soundsystem title of Kahn & Neek, anything baring the Gorgon Sound name is something we need to pay attention to. For the third Peng Sound release the label has pulled out and pressed up four tracks straight from the Gorgon Sound dub box, creating a monster of an EP. Mastered via tape, cut across four sides, stunning gatefold sleeve design all for under £10; these guys are doing it proper.
If you’re looking for wobble this isn’t it, and the same story if you’d be expecting Channel One style dubs. Rather pleasingly instead, Gorgon Sound serves up the kind of low-end rhythm that rarely gets pressed, sitting somewhere in between Notting Hill Carnival vibes and the days of sub at Plastic People. It’s pretty close to perfection for us, the sounds existing in that wonderful space where dub keeps the play-out mentality but is just pure soul across the top – proper dancehall lean on this project.
I really like what Kahn and Neek do. Individually and together they’ve been consistently smashing it over the last few years. Some of the only bass music I still buy regularly is that with their names on it. The Gorgon Grime cassette came under some unnecessary fire from the purists last year, but in my opinion was a praise-worthy release. In addition, the ‘Backchat’ / ‘Dubchat’ 12″ has been my most played record of the last few months, soon need to buy another copy, as it’s a pure warehouse weapon that hasn’t left the play-out box since purchase.
With an active soundsystem and releases straight from their own dubplates, properly need to stay on top of their movements. The ‘Gorgon Sound‘ EP gives us four tracks cut across two plates, nothing phoned in, every joint designed for system battering. I can’t emphasise enough what a quality pressing this is, housed in a gatefold sleeve designed by Studio Tape-Echo and Joshua Hughes-Games.

It has been just over a year since Gorgon Sound made their debut on Peng Sound Records. The mighty ‘Find Jah Way’ continues to spin loud and clear every time, having gained anthemic status, this tune alone has set the pair right at the front of a new wave of UK Dub and Steppers music.
True to soundsystem culture, Gorgon Sound keep their dubplates tightly locked in the box – Apart from a few fortunate and highly respected selectors, their tracks remain exclusive to the dance.

For their self titled EP, Peng Sound were granted full access to their collection and, after much deliberation, narrowed the selection down to four of the finest tracks.
‘Rise’ opens the gatefold sleeve seeing the pair link up with vocalist Junior Dread from Brazil, a nine-minute disco mix of the original track made especially for this release.
The flip of the plate includes another collaboration, this time closer to home. Guy Calhoun, vocalist and bass player from the Bristol ‘Dub From Atlantis’ collective offers his conscious lyrics for track two – ‘Righteous Dub’ an astute commentary on these austere times.
The second plate offers two tougher cuts, – the mighty ‘Orion’ and the remorseless ‘Medusa’ close the EP.
Aimed straight at the chest, these heavy steppers riddims will hit real hard on the soundsystem, no doubt at all.
Taking full pride in the product and paying close attention to sound quality, each track has been mastered by Lewis at Stardelta via half-inch tape and cut with the sound system in mind, ensuring that these tracks bang as loudly in the dance as they should.
