Gábor Lázár – ‘ILS (Interconnected Logical Systems)’ CD [Presto!?]

First spotted sharing the Split cassette release with Russell Haswell back in April, Gábor Lázár is set to release his debut full length this month on the ever-good Presto?! label. ILS sees Lázár continue the algorithmic electronic experiments that captivated us on Split extended out to a CD release dropping sometime in November.

Via his label Last Foundation Lázár has released not only himself and Haswell but sonic experimenters Evol, Ekoplekz and Schneider TM to name but a few. As far as his own works go the (occasional) producer’s mantra of “limitation breeds creation” couldn’t be more applicable.

My interface works with unique rules (algorithms) which generate new temporal and spectral variations, and deconstruct the composition step by step over the track’s duration..
The synth is monophonic (so only one note can be played on the synth in the same time) and I felt the potential into turning a technical disadvantage into advantage in the composition, so I decided if I can’t play two notes in the same time then I won’t even change the note never in a track..so what you hear is played on one note…all the changes in the tracks achieved on the core level of additive synthesis.

As a rule we’re generally fans of experimental music, leaning towards the likes of Schmickler and Florian Heckler as much as the algorithmic projects of k3T3m, Evol and Tristan Perich’s One-Bit Symphony. Lázár as an artist belongs int he second group, and surprisingly is already producing some of the most interesting music of the time.

His style is as hectic and unpredictable as it is battered and composed. In the stretching and squashing of the single note for an entire album you’d expect some form of repetitiveness but you get a degree of the opposite. The whole thing’s engaging and surprisingly unparanoid. There’s a level of comfort in hearing the same note pushed and pulled in different directions.

This isn’t peak-hour transport music to go to soundtrack your journey to and from work. It’s deeply hypnotic, sort of the audio equivalent of a pipe smoking hobby. The more you listen, the more you realise what a masterpiece this is, refined and worked on until an algorithm and one note becomes a brilliant collection of tracks. Unlike most limitation-based projects that are nice and quirky as a novelty, once you accept the first minute of the first track, you’re hooked until the end.

ILS comes out on CD and digitally sometime in November. Get on it and give it the time it deserves and you’ll be rewarded.

Gábor Lázár is a Budapest based artist working with digital sound synthesis and self-developed interfaces. In his work he attempts to avoid the traditional temporal measurements and composes pieces based on one note with focus on spectral changes using additive synthesis. His interface works with tester algorithms based on simple mathematical operations which help in the compositional decesion-making and trigger different temporal and spectral musical events run by an unique timeline.

Gábor studied electronic music and media art at University of Pécs – Faculty of Music and Visual Arts and he is co-founder of a label called Last Foundation. His first release has been published in April 2013 in collaboration with Russell Haswell including four short pieces of his works and a full-length composition from Russell on a C46 split cassette limited to100 numbered copies.
