Darryl Pandy RIP

The Chicago vocalist Darryl Pandy sadly passed away on the 10th June.

Although his vocals appeared on many tracks, he will be fondly remembered for the huge vocal performance he gave on the worldwide hit Love Can’t Take Turn Around, a collaboration with Farley “Jackmaster” Funk (who co-produced the track along house music pioneers Vince Lawrence and Jesse Saunders).

The track was a cover of Isaac HayesI Can’t Turn Around and came into being after Farley heard his flatmate Steve ‘JM Silk’ Hurley’s take on the classic. With the help of Saunders (credited with creating the first ‘house’ track On and On) and Lawrence (who completely changed the main drive of the song with new lyrics and a change in the title) it is perhaps the most recognizable song to emerge from the early days of Chicago’s nascent House sound; in fact in the UK it was deemed to be a pure pop song and it reached the Top Ten in 1986.
