The Choppertone / The Eigenharp

For those not familiar with Create Digital Music I can’t recommend it enough. It’s pure madness. If you’ve got even a slight fetish for off the wall electronic music, analogue gear and custom-made bits of equipment then welcome to your new hangout. Most of the time I have no idea what’s going on but still find a form of schoolboy glee from their articles.

This video is currently one of my favourites, Nick Francis walking us through the creation of the Choppertone, one of the most over the top and ridiculously dope Ableton controllers ever built.

The latest CDM offering was just as good and ended up in an hour of internet research on something I’ll never buy. Created by Eigenlabs back in 2009, I’ve just been introduced to the Eigenharp Alpha. Part woodwind, part drum, and part piano, it’s been billed as “the most expressive instrument ever” and boasts “120 highly sensitive keys, 12 percussion keys, 2 strip controllers, a breath pipe and numerous pedal inputs.” I’d love to see Illum Sphere on one of these.

Check out the clips below, covering both Philip Glass and DJ Shadow as well as what appears to be a threeway jam session from within the Eigenharp community.
