Across the last three years of us doing Awkward Movements on NTS we’ve rinsed a lot of work from Bryn Jones aka Muslimgauze. And pretty much every single week during that time there’s been talk around doing the Muslimgauze tribute show, a documentary of sorts to share some of our favourite records and why Jones’ music remains a cornerstone of what brings us together sonically.
With all the chatter I never though it would happen, but Paul Ackroyd finally put a deadline on the thing and got it done last week, originally broadcasting across the weekend on NTS.
And it turned out cracking. In fact you know it’s good just from looking at the planning of it that took over his floor in the photo below.
Between the tracks and narration on records played you’ve also got interviews pilfered from video channels featuring the man himself, recorded before Jones’ untimely passing in 1999. Two hours in all, not nearly enough to cover his legacy or incredible recorded life, but a brilliant primer and listen on any given day.
Thinking we might do one of these each year, specifically for the work of Bryn Jones, and maybe mix in more dedication shows every few months.
The official archive will be going up on Mixcloud soon and will be posted here, though unfortunately due to issues with there T’s and C’s it will be geo-blocked for some. It’s actually a silver lining though as Awkmo cohort Charity Queen aka Kieron has thrown together a video on Vimeo for it, featuring the covers of the albums as they’re played.
Check it out below in it’s full glory or get in touch for the mp3 version.
