All My Records Episode 11

The brutal realisation that I wouldn’t play most of my record collection again before I die prompted me to start doing All My Records. As the name suggests this is is me playing all my records by order that they’ve ended up in my shelves: left to right, top to bottom, how they’re currently sitting. Single deck show, one off and one on, ladened with unnecessary reminiscing about when and why I bought them and talking crap. It’s remarkably therapeutic, I recommend you try it.

About five minutes before I started recording this session I decided that Off The Self would be a better name for the show. D mistakingly called it that a few weeks ago and it stuck with me. Since yesterday though I’ve rethought it and so we’re keeping with All My Records for now.

As I may have mentioned it’s a pain in the ass doing levels on a single deck show. But that’s the format I chose and much like the title I’m loathe to change it now that we’ve begun. The reason I bring this up however is that Motor City Drum Ensemble coming in a little louder than I expected alerted my house that something interesting was going on inside the record room.

My kids are now four and doors do not keep them out. Around the five minute mark you’ll hear my daughter coming in as a turtle and later on they help introduce a Moxie record. It seemed appropriate. After all should I actually die before I play all my records I’ll make it my final request for one of them to finish the task. That and a Viking burial.

Mostly remnants of a run of disco and house records are played in this session. Some of my favourites from the ‘disco’ bunch in my collection in fact. Edits from the Ghost Town and Moxie labels, MCDE back to back, some unofficial whites of La Bionda and Charanga ’76 and then some Midnight Lab Band (which is probably misfiled) sandwiched between Andres on Prime Numbers and Norma Jean Bell.

I pulled the pin a bit early as the records were about to veer in to proper house and techno. I’m looking forward to doing a more in depth session with them next time.
